Intro
And we’re back! Kind of. Much better than I was, no fevers or anything else but still get absolutely shattered when trying to do anything. A bit of long COVID? Who knows, but at least I can get out and about and go to the cinema. Which means…
Shazam!
Bet you didn’t see that coming? This week had John Wick all over it but couldn’t make it work and if I didn’t take the youngest to see the new Shazam! then he probably would have exploded.
To clarify; we watched Shazam! a few weeks ago as the trailer for the sequel was all over the videos he was watching on YouTube so he wanted to watch it. And he enjoyed it, like properly enjoyed it. Which is understandable, the film was a bit of a breath of fresh air when it came out in 2019. It came out in the wake of the Justice League carnage after Aquaman. It was part of that shifting of the ocean liner, the move away from the grim dark of the Snyder films towards something a bit brighter and, whisper it, fun. You combine that breezy attitude with the concept of a kid turning into a superhero thanks to a magic word, and you have a great family film.
And he was very excited about the sequel, like counting down the days till we were seeing it.
And its not bad! I mean, from all accounts its bombed and also got a bit of a kicking from the critics. And I can understand why, they probably needed to land the sequel a bit sooner after the first film but the pandemic didn’t help with that. And then there’s probably a bit of bad taste left after Black Adam and the shenanigans around that.
But, most importantly, my son loved it. It had him in tears in some parts of the film and punching the air in others. Which is brilliant; you’ll get plenty of people turning up their noses at this film, about how simple and pointless it is. But for some people it will still connect and might end up being a film that sticks with them for years afterwards.
So yeah, I had a decent time and my son gave it 10 billion stars out of 5.
A new episode as well
Despite the plague house managed to get a podcast edited:
I wasn’t on it, as it was recorded just before I was sick and at the heights of my wife being sick (she coughed so much she strained her ribs) but I still managed to get it out of the door. Hopefully we can stick to a tighter schedule this year so you’ll get more than 2 or 3 in your ears this year. Maybe.
I promise nothing.
